Nude Pictures

Texting has become very popular within our society. Children, parents, teenagers, and pretty much every age group texts. However, more recently "sexting" has become more and more popular among teenagers, in particular teenage girls. Sexting is a pretty self explanatory term, and I am pretty sure most people have heard of it. The growing issue is that teenagers are beginning to send nude pictures of themselves. They may not realize it, but once they send any pictures, they could then be uploaded to internet, forwarded to friends, and so many other things could potentially be done with these pictures. It is a serious issue because these girls might not realize the potential harm of these pictures. Another issue is that these girls could be getting peer pressured into doing these things, when they might not even feel comfortable with it.
Recently there has been a lot of debate about the laws surrounding sexting. There have been some cases where teenagers have almost been charged with possession of child pornography, but in reality it wasn't actually a violation of any of these laws. The sending of these nude pictures is a very new development so, many people think that we need to come up with a completely new set of laws to regulate this sexting. I think that they are going to have to start regulating this soon because it is becoming more and more of an issue.

  1. I agree with you Patricia.Teenagers don't understand the dangers of sexting and since it is so new, ways to warn them about the problems that might be caused have not been developed. As the issue grows there definitely needs to be some sort of regulation because kids aren't going to stop on their own because they don't know better.

  2. The only laws that may need to be put in place are those in which protect these "sexter's" from their images being shown to an audience that they were unintended for.

What I mean by this is that it should be illegal for the recipiant to upload an inappropriate image of someone else without the conscent of the sender. However if the sender chooses to send a naked picture to a particular person then ultimately they should have to live with that decision and the social consequence that may be attached with it.

  3. Although I think the whole concept is pretty degrading in general, I would have to agree with both Pat and Andrew. I understand that maybe teenagers are not mature enough to realize the potential consequences of sending a "private" image/text to somebody else, but at the end of the day it was that persons decision to send the image/text and they ultimately should have to live with that decision. Maybe it would be helpful to try to get some awareness about the potential dangers of "sexting."

  4. I agree with the previous comments that the responsibility of the actions of sexting are with the people who take the picture of themselves. However, there should be something like a copy-write law that prohibits the receiver from uploading the pictures they got from others.

On a different note this development in use of technology and more and more sexual content out on the web shows quite a bit about the development of our society. 50 years ago how many people (and especially teenagers) would have thought of taking naked pictures of themselves and mailing them to their crushes? Not very many I would assume, but nowadays there are enough to even establish a new word for this trend.
