Since technology has continued to develop more and more, each generation has adapted to live with the technology they know. When cell phones first came out, texting was non-existent. Now, there are so many smart phones that it has almost become impossible to get by without having texting on your phone. People whose ages ranging from 3rd or 4th grade to senior citizens are learning to text, and we have to ask ourselves, is this really necessary? Do children at such young ages and senior citizens really need to learn how to text?
Now, we even text at times when we shouldn't. Some people text mid-conversation, which I know I personally do this, and it is in fact very rude to do. However, since we have grown up around this sort of behavior, we think it is ok to zone out and text when someone you are with is trying to have a conversation with you. People also text in school during class, in meetings, at family gatherings, and now there is even a law in place to outlaw texting while driving. I personally am guilty of texting in all these ways, and I'm not saying that I think texting is a bad thing. I realize that there are in facts so many advantages to texting, and that it has helped our society develop. I simply think that we need to learn or at least realize, since it really is common sense, when it is acceptable to text and when it isn't. By acting as though we need to text every minute of every day, which many people do, makes it seem as though texting has taken over our lives, and that we can't live without it. I just think that we need to realize that as great as texting is, we don’t have to do it as frequently as we do.
Yes. Yes it has. I cannot live without texting. My mom complains that I don't call her enough so I text her smiley faces on occasion to compensate. She claims it isn't as personal and I agree, but I love her so its okay. I've caught myself texting while driving on several occasions and am not sure if its legal or not in my state, but I definitely feel that it should be due to the distraction it causes. But, I still love to text.
ReplyDeleteTexting is definitely taking over our lives...I think texting is great, I think that there are so many pros to texting, but I definitely get really frustrated when people text in situations where they shouldn't. A lot of my friends will text when we are talking and will just completely not respond when I ask a question or say something looking for their opinion and I think that is very rude. In addition, I know that when I am at dinner with my family or as a guest I just don't even bother taking my phone out of my bag because I think that is so rude, as well as texting and driving...really dangerous. If people could just learn what situations texting is appropriate for and what situations it is not appropriate for then I think it wouldn't be such a big deal. Other than that I definitely think the pros of texting outweigh the cons.
ReplyDeleteI am definitly addicting to texting. Today many choose text oppose to calling, due to its convenience and ease-of-use. I like the point that you made about texting between conversations and during class. This is a rude habit that I catch myself doing alot. It has become a social norm for people to text during dinners, classes, and conversations.
ReplyDeletePeople are definitely absurdly connected to texting. My friend just got a new driod yesterday and one of the features is that you can speak to it and it will convert it into a text messages. It seems crazy because if you are going to just speak anyways then why not make a phone call? Why have your words be converted into a text message which is completely impersonal and can be interpreted in the way you did not mean it? Although I see it to be strange, I am a culprit to doing all of the acts of texting as well. I believe this generation is so addicted to texting and they realize it may be unhealthy but could not imagine life with out it.
ReplyDeleteI guess a good question would be – what’s next? As you say in your post, texting is a relatively new technology that was not around when we were in elementary school. What is going to be the next technology that causes us to be distracted? Is it going to be some version of Apple’s FaceTime or something else? Interesting to ponder…
