Facebook: A way to stay connected

Facebook has become one of the most popular social networking sites on the internet. It allows you to stay connected with friends, family, and pretty much anyone you’d like to, given they have a Facebook themselves. I personally believe that Facebook has become a very important key in people’s lives to stay connected no matter how far they are apart. My profile allows me to say my interests, where I go to school, what music I like, and it so many other things as well. I can post pictures of myself, and do so many other things all at the click of a button.
One up and coming aspect of Facebook is that employers are beginning to use it to look at people and see who they are and what they do with their spare time. This could be very beneficial, yet it also could hurt some people’s job opportunities. This particular example just proves how many different ways Facebook can be used to observe and look at people. Our society is starting to get more and more involved with Facebook, and we are realizing all the different capabilities that it provides for us. As long as people keep their Facebook clean and appropriate then it could really help them to move forward in their lives. If Facebook continues to develop and become more advanced, then who knows what we will be using it for in the future?

  1. Some people seem to have a problem with the fact that employers use Facebook as an "investigation" tool during hiring. If I understand your post correctly, you're comfortable with it and believe that people need to take responsibility for their Facebook pages. I agree. If you control what you post and who you associate with, there is no reason to worry.

  2. I agree with your point that sensorship is so important when posting interests, pictures, and comments on Facebook. People often forget that this is a public site that can be accessed by anyone. I feel that the capabilites of Facebook can be put to good use, if the site is appropriatly monotored and not abused by individuals.

  3. Personally I’m not as into Facebook as many people are. However, I believe that there is a never ending pros and cons list when it comes to discussing what Facebook is all about. One can practically know someone by checking their Facebook profile. It is not only a way of advertize ourselves but a way to advertize everything. The site has grown so much in the last couple of years that it has multiple uses. You were saying hoe employers can check the employees profile and judge them according to that, and I agree, but it is also the other way around. People or the prospective customers can check companies Facebook profile and become aware of their products or services and their advertisements, and so on.

  4. Facebook is a great social networking tool, as well as a fun website for people to go on. There are many dangers of facebook and one could be that corporations are checking people's pages as they apply for jobs. Another could potentially be that strangers and bad people are viewing personal information that they would otherwise not have any access to. Despite the dangers, I also agree that if people are smart with the ways they use this website then it will just serve as an entertaining social tool. By keeping one's Facebook "clean" and not displaying too much personal information, then no one should have to worry about any of Facebook's apparent dangers.

  5. I agree with the fact that EVERYONE has facebook. I recently received a friend request from my dad and I am already facebook friends with my mom and grandmother. All different businesses use it to connect to their customers. Today I saw on the Nike website you could "like" the different pairs of shoes that they had and it some how then connected to your facebook page. Different companies also have different deals found on their facebook page which is providing a whole new branch of marketing. There are so many different uses and people are definitely taking advantage of them.

  6. facebook is such a convenient way to stay in touch with all of my friends from home when we are all at school and away from each other. Uploading pictures also allows me to see what they have been up too. I have also seen many clothing websites that allow you the option to upload what you like to facebook and let you show people what you recently bought. Theses companies are using facebook as an additional source of advertising. The idea that companies are now using facebook to look up potential employees is very dangerous for some people. Depending on your privacy setting, companies could see all your pictures and activities which could either lead to securing the job you want, or losing it.

  7. I believe that facebook is a great tool to stay connected with friends and family members who, without facebook, you would loose contact with. For example, a bunch of my friends from home go to schools in other states, but through facebook I am able to see photographs of what they are doing, which allows me to feel more connected to them. It is key for maintaining long distance relationships and even for finding past friends...I know that my mom has a face book and she has recently been able to find old high school classmates. All in all I think the social aspect of facebook is great!

  8. I'm not that big of a Facebook user and I actually think the cons outweigh the pros. Yes it is a very convenient way to keep in touch with people and find friends with whom you have not spoken to in a while, but I think there are better methods of doing so. I just think that so many things can go wrong with these social networking sites. It's kind of sad that a picture of you drinking a beer in a Halloween outfit in college could somehow affect a potential job offer. And on a more serious end of the spectrum, it can lead to stalking and possibly more. But it is nice that you can control privacy settings, but I still think Facebook is too much of a good thing.

  9. Your point about 'job opportunities' found great resonance from your classmates--that is a sign of you doing a fine job. I believe that this blog could be improved by moving beyond the statement of the obvious (e.g. facebook connects people, allows us to express our identities) and emphasize on the curious (how facebook censor, classify, and exclude communication and information). You were doing a little bit with the "job" issue, but it could have been so much more developed. Look for the extraordinary in the ordinary. Seek the counterintuitive--this will help your entry increase its depths.
