Grey’s Anatomy is my favorite television show. I love watching it, and I am excited for every new episode, even watching some multiple times. I chose Grey’s Anatomy to talk about because as great of a show as it is, I think it is a great example of how unrealistic some aspects of television are becoming. I also find it interesting the way I still love it even though some of the scenarios are very far-fetched. There is definitely a lot of realistic aspects of Grey’s, but if I had to go to Seattle Grace Hospital, I don’t know how I’d feel about it. This is because although in the show it is considered a great hospital, I personally wouldn’t want my doctors to act the way they do in the work place. From Syphilis outbreaks to the chief of surgery getting away with being drunk, Seattle Grace Hospital somehow still manages to stay successful. I think the lack of reality is a good thing because it provides entertainment, but for some shows in particular this could be very dangerous if someone who doesn’t have the ability to realize this watches these unrealistic situations. This is related to the fact that we suspend disbelief while watching television and other types of media. Television can and obviously will continue to do this, but we just need to make sure that everyone in our Society grasps this concept to make sure it doesn't affect us negatively.

I think that when people do watch these television shows they understand that these programs have been made to just provide us with a form of entertainment and they suspend their disbelief about reality. However, when small children watch these shows they may think that these situations presented on primetime television are in fact real life, therefore I think that if parents were to monitor their children and tell them that these shows are in fact pretend situations there is no way that they can impact us negatively.
ReplyDeleteI am also a huge Grey's fan and I have to agree with you Trisha. There's so much drama in one hospital you can't believe that would actually happen and still have the creidbility Seattle Grace has. Suspension of disbelief is definitely playing a huge factor in this series but that is necessary for entertainment.

In this clip is when Izzie Stevens cuts a patient's, Denny Duquette, LVAD wire which is helping him live. She fell in love with her patient and cut the wire so that his condition would get worse so that he would be moved up on the donor list in order to steal a heart from a patient at another hospital. Denny ends up dying and it is the fault of these interns. Realistically, if this was to ever happen the intern would have to be immediately cut from the program. There is no chance a hospital could ever afford having an intern at their establishment who would ever do such a thing. However in the show, despite Izzie's temporary absence, she does end up coming back of course because the actress has a contract with the show which is not up yet.
I love Grey's Anatomy as well but I never thought of the show this way. Grey's Anatomy does affect the image of doctors and hospitals in the publics mind. However, I agree with Abeer Jain that as the audience we know very well that those actors don't have anything to do with real Seattle Grace doctors. But I also think that not everyone is very educated and everyone has access to these shows. So maybe there are people that are more influenced by TV than we are.
ReplyDeleteThe connection b/w Grey's Anatomy and the suspension of disbelief is a good one. I can also see your personal passion for this show. This essay however could be improved if you could organize the sequence of your ideas and support each one better. For example, how G.A. diverge from reality is not explained clearly here; how will G.A. affect us negatively if it was taken by some audience as the reality--this point wasn't supported at all. So, a more organized writing style is my suggestion of improvement.
